CHAPTER ELEVEN

I felt a lot stronger in the morning. True to her word, Jasmine cooked me breakfast. Bacon, sausages, beans, eggs and a whole heap of hash browns. She made me double what she made herself, which, she said, was to make up for the fact I had hardly touched any food in the last couple of days. I did not complain and ate everything she gave me. She even offered me one of her own sausages, but I couldn’t bring myself to take it.

“I’m not going to lie to you,” she said while we ate, “your father’s worried.”

“I know. And I feel bad for that. I’ll tell him when I get home tonight.”

“You will?”

“I’m not sure. At the moment, yes, but I may chicken out.”

“Want me to come with you?”

“No. No, I can’t keep having everyone hold my hand all the time. Did he say anything?”

“About you? Sure. Plenty. He asked me what was wrong and I said it wasn’t my place to tell him, which was true. He then asked me whether I thought it was as bad as you’re making it out to be.”

“What did you say to that?”

“I said sure it is. Anything that affects Ro this badly has to be bad, otherwise it wouldn’t affect her. He asked me whether I personally thought it was bad. And I again told him it wasn’t my place to say.”

“Poor man.”

“Yeah, I thought that, too. So I threw him a bone and hoped you wouldn’t mind. I told him it wasn’t anything you couldn’t get over, and that I’d help you get over it as soon as humanly possible. That seemed to make him happy. No idea why.”

“He trusts you.”

“He trusts you, too. That’s why he’s letting you do this.”

We talked a little more, but there was work to be done so we could not sit and chat all morning. It was a shame, because it was peaceful sitting there with Jasmine. In her house, I had no worries.

We left the house together, but went our separate ways. Jasmine had told me nothing of her plans for the morning, but she needed me to keep the shop running while she did whatever it was she needed to do. It was the least I could do for her. Trade wasn’t even too bad that morning. With my having broken some of the stock, we had room for everything we had intended to throw away. The sale on the trinkets did well and I even managed to shift a few postcards. The sun shone gloriously, which increased our trade in beach items, although my heart sank a little when I noticed a new delivery of green sandals had arrived.

Jasmine appeared at the shop shortly before midday and looked very pleased with herself.

“What?” I asked, her good humour infectious. “Jas, what have you done?”

“Stopped moping, for one thing. Last night, Ro, that was the first time I’d told anyone about what happened to me. I didn’t do it for me, I did it for you.
